All ‘Cowboy Carter’ songs ranked worst to best

Once again, Beyoncé has crafted an album without skips, and Cowboy Carter’s acclaim is more than well-deserved.

However, the simultaneous burden and joy of ranking every song on the album from worst to best falls on me. Not that I mind though. The beauty of Cowboy Carter is that each song offers something completely different from the other. As a result, the title of “best song on the album” is more than subjective, because even I may have changed my mind a couple of times since the album’s been released.

Much like Act I: Renaissance, there’s no bad song on the project, and each tune weaves seamlessly and beautifully into the next. Undoubtedly, the interludes, although important, will make up for the bottom part of the rank, while I move upwards to declare one lucky song number one! But whether or not you agree with me, that’s okay! As long as you’re bumping to Cowboy Carter, you’re alright in my book (and I hope I’m alright in yours!) So saddle up, as I rank each of the 27 tracks from least favorite, to “I literally cannot stop hitting rewind on this.”

27. “SMOKE HOUR ★ WILLIE NELSON”

26. “SMOKE HOUR II”

25. “THE LINDA MARTELL SHOW”

23. “DOLLY P”

24. “OH LOUISIANA”

22. “AMEN”

21. “ALLIIGATOR TEARS”

20. “DESERT EAGLE”

19. “MY ROSE”

18. “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM”

17. “PROTECTOR”

16. “JUST FOR FUN”

15. “TYRANT”

14. “RIIVERDANCE”

13. “JOLENE”

12. “SPAGHETII”

11. “16 CARRIAGES”

10. “BLACKBIIRD”

9. “DAUGHTER”

8. “II MOST WANTED”

7. “SWEET ★ HONEY ★ BUCKIIN”

6. “LEVII’S JEANS”

5. “FLAMENCO”

4. “II HANDS II HEAVEN”

For the top three tracks, let’s dig a little deeper as to why they’ve received the crown of Cowboy Carter’s most acclaimed trio.

3. “AMERIICAN REQUIEM”

It’s not news anymore about what pushed Beyoncé to create Cowboy Carter. After feeling ostracized by the country music industry back in 2016, the Texas native decided to kick back the best way she knew how to- with her music. “AMERIICAN REQUIEM” is basically her ode to her roots.

In summary, she’s letting everyone know that she deserves to be heard, because nobody owns the monopoly on the genre. In fact, it’s quite ironic considering she was once labeled “too country,” in her early years, only to be dismissed years later as “not country enough.” For years, Black artists have been gatekept from country music, and this song (and the album), serves as a way to disrupt the system. Truly, as far as album openers go, it doesn’t get better than this champion of a song.

2. “YA YA”

Right before “YA YA” blows our hats off, the legendary Linda Martell tips her hat to Beyoncé’s artistry on “THE LINDA MARTELL SHOW.” The 20th track on the album is the most explosive. “YA YA” pays homage to the pioneering Rodeo Chitlin Circuit, which served to give Black voices in music their very own space to make music and express their creative artistry while touring. It’s such an emotional experience, especially for veteran artists who could never have imagined that their music would travel around the globe. Just as Linda Martell said, “YA YA” is a “unique listening experience.” We’re getting a history lesson, star power, and some of the best vocals of her career… all in one song. What’s not to love?

1. “BODYGUARD”

Undoubtedly the digestible, radio-friendly song on Cowboy Carter, “BODYGUARD” is Beyoncé at her sexiest. Luckily, it also has the added benefit of being extremely infectious. With sultry vocals, and a comforting rhythm, “BODYGUARD” is quite like a warm, sunny day, lemonade in hand. Sure it’s not going to spur any historical deep dives, or push a hidden message. It’s simply a sweet, sweet song, and that’s what makes it so, so good.

What happened to George Floyd?

George Floyd was anonymous during his lifetime but after his murder, he became a symbol of protest that changed the face of American politics. The dust has now settled on his case, the verdicts are in and the facts are clear, so here’s exactly what happened to him.

Floyd’s life

Candles illuminate a makeshift headstone for George Floyd at the Say Their Names Cemetery on May 25, 2021 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. People gathered to remember Floyd, who died at the hands of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin one year ago today. Chauvin was found guilty on three counts of murder and manslaughter. Floyd was born on Oct. 14 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was the first of his four siblings to attend college, eventually playing basketball for Texas A&M University-Kingsville. After college he lived in Houston, where he briefly performed as a rapper under the name Big Floyd while working as an automotive customizer.

In the late 90s and early 2000s Floyd was convicted of various offenses and served time in jail, eventually being paroled in Jan. 2013. After his release he turned to religion, joining the Resurrection Houston ministry in which he mentored young men, worked in drug rehabilitation, helped find people jobs, and campaigned to reduce violence.

In 2014 he moved to Minneapolis, where he worked at a homeless shelter and continued assisting vulnerable young men to ensure they didn’t end up behind bars. Over this period he also worked as a security guard, delivery driver, and nightclub bouncer.

Floyd’s murder

On May 25, 2020 a Cup Foods employee called the police after they suspected Floyd had used a counterfeit $20 bill. The cops arrived as Floyd was in a car with two other passengers, pulling him from the car and handcuffing him.

While face down in the street police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee onto Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Two further officers held him down and a fourth attempted to prevent onlookers from intervening or seeing what was occurring. Throughout the incident Floyd repeatedly pleaded with cops, gasping that he was unable to breathe. Emergency medical technicians arrived to treat him, but Chauvin didn’t remove his neck from Floyd’s neck.

Floyd died at the scene, with his autopsy citing asphyxia due to neck and back compression. There were no underlying medical conditions that contributed to his death.

Amidst widespread horror at the police’s actions, Chauvin was fired and charged with murder. He was convicted on all charges on April 20, 2021 and at a sentencing hearing it was noted that he’d acted with “particular cruelty”. Chauvin was sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison for the murder.

His legacy

17-year-old Darnella Frazier recorded the entire murder and her video rapidly spread around the world. This unambiguous police brutality was impossible to ignore and mass protests spread, fuelled by simmering anger over excessive use of force by cops. The first protests were in Minneapolis but rapidly spread not just across the United States, but all around the world.

Estimates are that in the U.S. alone somewhere between 15 and 26 million people joined them, making them the largest protests in U.S. History. Though the vast majority of these were peaceful some spilled over into violence when police attacked protestors (and press covering the protests). In response, multiple cities declared curfews and the National Guard was activated.

Protesters demanded the prosecution of all four officers involved in Floyd’s death as well as new laws to control police racism, misconduct, and brutality and vastly improve their accountability to modern citizens.

The four cops were indeed prosecuted, receiving convictions for manslaughter for between 2 1/2 and 4 3/4 years. Reform of the police has been less successful, though chokehold and neck restraints have been banned or restricted by 17 state legislatures as a direct response to Floyd’s murder.

The Department of Justice also conducted a review of the Minneapolis Police Department, concluding that they had a dangerous track record of using excessive force, that they actively discriminate against Black and Native American People, that they discriminate against people with mental health disabilities, and that they routinely violate the civil rights of peaceful protestors. These conclusions were, as Attorney General Merrick Garland concluded:  “the patterns and practices we observed made what happened to George Floyd possible.”

Sadly but perhaps predictably not much has changed when it comes to police violence and widespread institutional racism cannot be wiped out overnight, even if politicians did care enough to enact sweeping police reform (FYI, they don’t). George Floyd won’t be the last person to be murdered by the cops, but at least this tragedy has raised awareness about the brutality that comes with the badge.

‘Sharon. Close enough to Karen’: Roommate from hell turns NYC dream into a nightmare with increasingly crazy behavior

TikToker Annelisa probably thought she was living the dream when she moved to New York from Oregon in fall 2021 for college.

Unfortunately, things quickly took a south-turn when she realized the program wasn’t for her so she dropped out after the first semester, not to mention that she was going through a breakup with her partner at the time. Well, at least she could count on some peace while at home, right? Unfortunately not, as Annelisa soon realized she had moved in with a Karen on steroids.

Annelisa is going viral for sharing the full story of what happened when she lived with a “roommate from hell” for three months. It all started when she needed a place to live once exiting her college dorms after leaving school, so Annelisa thought she had hit the jackpot upon discovering an Upper Manhattan apartment for just $1100 (including utilities) per month. The reason why the rent was so cheap, though, became clear when Annelisa discovered how awful the woman she was subleasing off, Sharon, was to live with.

@whatupwaltz

Replying to @ashhh🖤 watch this full thing cause I say IT ALL. I’m editing pt 2 right now and it will be up shortly 🤍 #roommatestorytime #movingout #nycroommates

Sharon the Karen is guilty of so many roommate red-flags that it’s hard to know where to start, but her crimes include coming into Annelisa’s room while she was out then forbidding her from installing a lock when she realized what she was doing and falsely claiming that Annelisa had busted the AC panel before charging her the “several hundred dollars” she apparently paid to have it fixed (it had not been fixed, apart from a bit of tape stuck across it).

She imposed so many ridiculous rules on Annelisa — she couldn’t throw food into the trashcan, she couldn’t take calls in the living room etc — that she eventually just kept to her room. Annelisa admits that she got so afraid of Sharon that she would pile stuff in front of her door at night and even slept with a taser within reach! With everything else going on in her life, Annelisa became “so miserable and depressed” and decided she had to go back home to Oregon.

Sharon’s response? She demanded Annelisa pay next month’s rent or move out immediately. When that intimidation tactic didn’t work, Sharon implored her to stay by telling her she was “the best rooomate she’d ever had.” That’s probably because she’d scared everyone else away sooner than poor Annelisa!

Now that Annelisa has put Sharon in her rearview mirror, the upside is that the lunatic leaser has at least helped her earn some TikTok clout, as users are obsessed with this whole saga. Thankfully, Annelisa had the foresight to record some of her exchanges with Sharon, which means we have actual evidence of just how unpleasant and combative this woman was in totally normal situations. Like when she invented a no-guests policy when Annelisa invited her sister to stay.

Or when she made up any problem she could to avoid giving Annelisa back her security deposit on her moving day.

@whatupwaltz

Replying to @Lex💕 Her inspecting the sheets took me out. I’ll post the rest of the move out day footage soon so stick around! This is the 2 year anniversary of moving out so I’m sharing the move out vids I never posted and some of the other videos. Also because bot accts have been steallingg my vids so please reporrt those if you see them #roommatefromhell #roommatefromhellseries #roommate

Commenters cannot believe everything that Annelisa went through during her incarceration with Sharon. Although maybe she should’ve had an inkling something was wrong from the off. “The fact the room was empty in Manhattan should have been the sign,” someone noted. As for how she could’ve gotten her own back on Sharon, some people had some hilarious ideas. “Put tuna cans in the vents before you leave,” one suggested, while other offered, “Put shrimp in the curtain rods.”

Let this be a lesson for us all: be careful who you’re moving in with because if a renting situation seems like it’s too good to be true, that’s probably because it is.
