What are UFOs’ alternative name and why is it preferred?

Season 11, episode 9 of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver came out on Sunday, April 21, 2024, but its focus was on a topic that has been a prominent if controversial debate in the scientific community as well as part of the news cycle for many decades now: Unidentified Flying Objects, better known as UFOs.

The episode gave examples of how the public has been purposefully misled by the government on this topic, like keeping secret programs from becoming public. The timing for this comes a little over a month after the Department of Defense released a 63-page document outlining the United States’ historical records of UFO sightings, which concludes that none of these were proven to be extraterrestrial activity.

In Oliver’s words: “It’s both promising and long overdue to see people approaching this issue soberly, scientifically, and perhaps most importantly, boringly.”

Here’s why the terminological change is considered relevant to the treatment of the topic.

UFOs or UAPs? What’s the difference?

The term Unidentified Flying Object emerged in the early 1950s, and has acquired layers of connotation associated with unscientific notions and concepts like science fiction and conspiracy theories.

To distance themselves from the term, as well as find another one that could encompass a broader range of phenomena not limited by the word “object”, military and scientific communities have adopted the term Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, or UAP, which NASA defines as “observations of events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena.” Although the term UAP has existed for a long while, it was only this century that it became more prevalent and preferred in scientific discourse.

In their UAP Independent Study Team Report, published in Sept. 2023, NASA acknowledged that the acquired collective perception surrounding UFOs hampers objective scientific pursuit, writing that: “The negative perception surrounding the reporting of UAP poses an obstacle to collecting data on these phenomena. NASA’s very involvement in UAP will play a vital role in reducing stigma associated with UAP reporting, which almost certainly leads to data attrition at present.”

Let’s hope that, as John Oliver argues at the end of the episode: “There needs to be room for honest inquiry because science is all about collecting small answers that will eventually help us address big questions.”

Is Dhruv Vikram’s Bison Based on a True Story?

After appearing in Mahaan, actor Dhruv Vikram is all set to return to theaters with his upcoming film, Bison. Makers have recently announced the film, sparking numerous speculations, with some believing it to be based on a biopic. However, the film’s director recently addressed these rumors.

Directed by Mari Selvaraj, the film’s first look has received a positive response from netizens eagerly awaiting its release. The upcoming movie will feature a cast including Anupama Parameswaran, Rajisha Vijayan, Lal, Pasupathy, Kalaiyarasan, Hari Krishnan, and others.

Notably, Mari changed crew for Bison’s filming and welcomed Nivas K Prasanna as the music composer. When Mari Selvaraj was asked about this change, he stated, “The script demanded fresh treatment, which is why I wanted to go with a completely new team.” Additionally, Mari Selvaraj highlighted that Bison marks his first collaboration with cinematographer Ezhil Arasu K and editor Sakthikumar.

Bison is a fictional film, not a biopic?

Earlier reports suggested that Bison would feature a biopic of the life of a Tamil Nadu Kabaddi player, Manathi Ganesan. Last year, director Mari confirmed this, stating, “He is an Arjuna Awardee and a very close relative. I always wanted to feature his story.”

However, director Mari debunked biopic rumors in recent discussions with the Times of India. He stated, “This film will revolve around kabaddi, but contrary to reports, it is not a biopic. But a fictional one. We will shoot a 60-day schedule in Tirunelveli, then move to Chennai for the remaining portions.” Thus, the director confirmed that Dhruv Vikram’s upcoming film will not depict the life of any sports player but rather offer a fictional narrative.

Aside from this project, Dhruv Vikram was last seen in the film Mahaan, where he starred alongside his father, Chiyaan Vikram. The action thriller flick was directed by Karthik Subbaraj and produced under the Seven Screen Studio banners.

The film’s release date announcement is still awaited as the makers have just begun shooting. Stay tuned for more updates related to Bison.

Who does Jeffrey Dean Morgan play in ‘The Boys’ Season 4?

The highly anticipated fourth season of The Boys debuts on Amazon Prime Video on June 13, 2024. The critically acclaimed satirical superhero show released its last episode nearly two years ago, so fans are understandably getting impatient for more ultraviolent superhero action.

Excitingly, the brilliant Jeffrey Dean Morgan — The Walking Dead’s Negan himself — will appear in the new season. The recent teaser for it showed his character warmly greeting Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher, suggesting the pair are past acquaintances.

Morgan is as excited as the show’s fans. He recently edited himself into some promo art for The Boys and posted the results on X with the humorous accompanying text: “Art is done for season 4. Good work, folks. I saved @TheBoysTV some dough.”

But who is Morgan playing in the show?

Who is ‘Monkey’?

The answer is Joe “Monkey” Kessler. In the comic books, Monkey is the name of Howard “Monkey” Kessler, so there’s been a bit of name modification for Morgan’s character, Joe.

The comic book version of the character is a CIA analyst whom Butcher turns to for information in his crusade against Supes. He’s a sexual deviant, a nervous wreck, and a coward who’s scared of everything, and Butcher gave him the nickname “Monkey” after accompanying him to the eccentric Doc Peculiar’s brothel, where green AIDS-infected monkeys molested his ears (isn’t The Boys so wholesome?).

The Boys series regularly deviates from its source material and, in addition to having a different first name to his comic book counterpart, Morgan’s version of Monkey looks like he’ll be a different animal. He looks very corporate and probably serves the same purpose, but his personality is worlds apart. He seems far more confident and has an air of badassery about him that’s typical of Dean Morgan’s performances.

This take on the character appears to be a man Butcher genuinely respects rather than someone he looks down on and takes advantage of. They seem to be on the same level, with Morgan’s Monkey jokingly mocking Butcher for calling his team “The Boys.”
