Overview

Akshay Kumar's latest film, Mission Raniganj, was released on Netflix last weekend after its theatrical release back in October. Directed by Tina Suresh Desai, the film is based on the Raniganj Coalfields collapse of 1989 in West Bengal. Mission Raniganj stars Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles, among others.

The Story

The Akshay Kumar-starrer depicts the frequent real-life accidents in underground coal mines. The film narrates the heroic tale of Jaswant Singh Gill, who bravely rescued 65 miners trapped in a flooded coal mine. Against all hope, Gill's determination prevailed, saving the miners from an otherwise tragic fate.

The Trapped Miners

The Raniganj underground mines were the nation's earliest coalfields. They provided livelihoods for several daily-wage laborers. One time, during their routine work, a blast breached the walls linked to the Ningha Pit, causing flooding that trapped the workers inside. With no way out, the miners relied on prayers and awaited rescue.

Blame Game and a Heroic Rescue

When the accident occurred, everyone started shifting blame instead of launching a rescue operation. However, when Jaswant Singh Gill, GM of Sp Mines, arrived, he sought permission to launch a rescue operation despite the odds. Along with TP Bindal and Tapan Ghosh, Jaswant devised an unconventional rescue strategy due to the urgency of the situation. However, Bindal and Ghosh had unresolved issues from the past.

A Personal Agenda

On the other hand, D. Sen was planning to take advantage of the tragedy for his personal gain. He wanted to exploit the crisis for profit and recognition, all by undermining Jaswant's capabilities to lead the rescue. Despite his objections, Jaswant received support from Ujjawal, enabling him to proceed with his rescue plan.

A Risky Rescue Plan

Jaswant Singh Gill planned to rescue experienced miners trapped below by digging a 29-inch borehole above the mine's highest point, where they were instructed to go during flooding. He was aiming to confirm their location and send a capsule down for their rescue. On the other hand, the trapped workers debated survival strategies while thinking about their families' compensation if they die.

Saving the Miners

Jaswant eventually discovered the miners beyond a stoppage wall, essential for preventing flooding and toxic gases. So his urgent task became ensuring the miners' safe extraction before asphyxiation occurred. Along with Bindal, Jaswant crafted a drill to dig a 29-inch, 150-meter borehole but they further needed Sen's Marshal crane for the rescue capsule's descent.

Sabotage and a Hero's Sacrifice

Sen, fueled by hatred for Ujjwal, sabotaged the crane to secure his position as CMD. His actions were rooted in past confrontations with Ujjwal and a desire for power. Despite efforts to secure another crane, Jaswant had to send the capsule, knowing the miners faced imminent danger. He then volunteered to go down with the capsule to ensure the miners' safety, despite Sen's interference to stop this action.

Rescue and Recognition

Towards the end of Mission Raniganj, Gobardhan Babu, a former miner and influential politician, got to know about Sen's actions against Jaswant and Ujjwal. Threatening severe consequences, he ensured the Marshal crane reached in time. As a result, all miners were rescued successfully. Jaswant, despite risking his eyesight in the dark mine, chose to come up last earning cheers from everyone. He also fulfilled his promise to Tapan Ghosh, assisting him in obtaining his dues and gratuity amount.

Heroic Title and Recognition

In the end, as a token of goodwill and gratitude, Jaswant received monetary compensation and an immediate promotion. His rescue story made headlines both nationally and internationally, and he was given the title "Capsule Gill." In the eyes of the families of the rescued miners, he became a god who stepped in to save their family when everyone had lost hope. He even received the Best Life Saver medal from the President of India for his bravery and selfless acts.
