British Nurse Lucy Letby to Face Retrial for Attempted Murder of Infant
Background
In August 2023, Lucy Letby, a British nurse, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six others. Retrial and Baby K
During the investigation and trial, the victims were referred to by letters instead of their names. Letby will now face retrial for the attempted murder of an infant known as "Baby K," a girl born in 2016. It is unclear why this specific charge is being retried while others were not. The new trial is expected to begin on June 10, 2024.
Investigation and Inquiries
Following the Letby scandal, the British government launched an inquiry to determine why the pattern of baby deaths was not detected earlier and why it took so long to identify Letby as a suspect. Letby was often alone with the children before they died or were found injured, and she was frequently the only nurse on duty during neonatal emergencies.
