The Tragic Accident
In May 2018, Cameron Herrin, then 18 years old, was drag racing his brand-new Ford Mustang on Tampa's Bayshore Boulevard. Driving at over 100mph in a zone with a speed limit of 45mph, Herrin failed to stop in time and struck 24-year-old Jessica Reisinger-Raubenolt and her 21-month-old daughter Lilia, who were lawfully crossing the road. Reisinger died instantly, while her daughter succumbed to her injuries the following day.
Legal Consequences
Herrin was charged with one count of unlawful racing and two counts of vehicular homicide. His friend, John Barrineau, who was also drag racing with Herrin, took a plea deal and was sentenced to 6 years in prison and 15 years of probation. Herrin's older brother, Tristan, had all charges against him dropped.
A Long Legal Battle
The trial faced numerous delays, causing additional agony for the victims' family. In April 2021, three years after the crash, Herrin was sentenced to 24 years in prison. He pleaded guilty to the charges and filed an appeal to reduce his sentence.
The Appeal and Online Support
In the appeal hearing, Herrin's lawyer criticized State Attorney Andrew Warren for his comments on the sentence. Warren defended his position, stating that justice had been served. Despite the appeal, the 24-year sentence was upheld, and Herrin is currently serving his time at the Graceville Correctional Facility in Florida.
Interestingly, Herrin has gained a large online following, particularly on TikTok, where videos related to his case have been viewed billions of times. This phenomenon, known as Hybristophilia, occurs when people become attracted to criminals.

On the other hand, critics, including YouTuber Phillip DeFranco, have called out the sympathy for Herrin, emphasizing the severity of his actions.
