Disney’s “Wish” Delivers Surprising Libertarian Message, But Falls Short of Classic Status
Disney's Leftward Lurch
Disney's recent battles with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and its woke agenda have been no secret. The studio's shift to the left has not only caused controversy, but it has also had a negative impact on their finances. Fans are left wondering when the studio will bring back the magic that made Disney a household name.
A Surprising Twist
The latest Disney film, "Wish," brings a surprising twist to the table. The story, set in the kingdom of Rosas, follows Asha, voiced by Ariana DeBose, who dreams of becoming King Magnifico's apprentice. However, she soon discovers that the King controls the wishes of the people, making them forget about their dreams. This revelation leads Asha on a mission to retrieve her grandfather's wish and expose the King's deception.
A Journey with Unlikely Sidekicks
On her quest, Asha is joined by Star, an adorable star who serves as her guide. While Star may be cute, the lackluster sidekick leaves much to be desired. However, the film does redeem itself with Valentino, a talking goat voiced by Alan Tudyk, who adds some much-needed humor to the story.
A Direct Assault on Big Government
What sets "Wish" apart from other Disney films is its direct criticism of Big Government and the idea of relying on it for protection. The King promises safety and happiness while discouraging dreaming and personal freedom. The film's core message challenges the notion of government control and advocates for individual agency.
A Missed Opportunity
While "Wish" starts off strong with catchy musical numbers and stunning animation, it falls short in some areas. The world-building is complex and at times overwhelming, and certain scenes lack the whimsy and charm that Disney films are known for. Additionally, the film's diverse cast is not accompanied by any woke lectures, which may surprise some viewers.
A Libertarian Message, But Not Quite a Classic
"Wish" offers a shockingly Libertarian message, advocating for personal freedom and individualism. However, despite its unique twist, the film fails to live up to the standards set by past Disney classics. Audiences of all ideological backgrounds may find themselves wanting a more satisfying third act that captures the true Disney magic.
