Disney Plus and Hulu Merger

Disney recently announced its plans to merge Disney Plus and Hulu to create a "one app experience." This move is expected to launch next month, with both streaming services and their content being unified under one platform. But what does this mean for the future of Disney Plus?

Marvel's Streaming Woes

Marvel's streaming shows have had their fair share of ups and downs on Disney Plus. While shows like Loki and maybe Moon Knight have been successful, others have been considered failures. Thor: Love and Thunder, in particular, has been a sore spot for the streamer. Despite losing less money in Q4 of 2023 compared to the previous year, Disney Plus still suffered losses exceeding $300 million. However, despite these setbacks, Disney has no plans to shut down the streamer.

The Road to Merger

Before the merger can take place, Disney needs to finalize its deal with Comcast to buy out its one-third stake in Hulu. The company is offering over $8 billion to become the sole owner of the streamer's content. Once the deal is complete, the combined Disney Plus and Hulu app will be launched in beta in the United States in December 2023, followed by an official launch in spring of next year.

The New App Experience

With the merger, Disney Plus and Hulu will exist as separate libraries within the unified app. Subscribers who purchase the new dual bundle of Disney Plus and Hulu will have access to both services in one place. The "one-app experience" will allow viewers to easily toggle between the two platforms. While some titles, like Marvel's Echo, will be available on both services, they will have separate libraries.

No Plans for Erasure

Despite the merger, Disney has no plans to erase either streaming service from existence. The new version of the app will simply make it easier for viewers to switch between Disney Plus and Hulu. Additionally, Disney hopes that the merger will help expand its advertising revenue.
