MCU Rests Its Future on Fantastic Four and X-Men

Marvel Studios is placing its bets on the upcoming Fantastic Four and X-Men reboots after a string of underperforming projects. Deadpool 3, set to feature cameos from 20th Century Fox veterans, is the only MCU movie slated for release in 2024, while the first entry in Phase Six, Fantastic Four, is scheduled for May 2025.

Will the Fourth Time Be the Charm for the First Family?

The Fantastic Four, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1961, hold a significant place in the Marvel universe. With their return to the big screen, Marvel is hoping to capitalize on the cultural cache and generate excitement among fans. However, the track record of previous Fantastic Four films raises concerns about the success of the reboot.

Previous Films Fall Short of Box Office Expectations

Despite nostalgic fondness for the mid-aughts Fantastic Four films, their box office performance was less than stellar. The 2005 film brought in $333.5 million worldwide, while its sequel, released in 2007, earned just $302 million. The 2015 reboot, aptly titled Fant4stic, fared even worse with a mere $168 million in global ticket sales. The franchise's total box office earnings across three movies amounted to $803.3 million.

Reboot's High Stakes: Reaching the Billion-Dollar Mark

Marvel Studios is banking on the Fantastic Four reboot to bring in close to $1 billion to justify its future within the MCU. With the studio's heavy reliance on the success of this film, it needs to deliver something extraordinary and universally beloved. Failing to surpass the $800 million mark could be a blow to the Multiverse Saga and indicate a shift in audience preferences towards Avengers and Spider-Man.

Packed Cast and Cinematic Storm

The inclusion of major names like Pedro Pascal and Anya Taylor-Joy in the cast of the fourth Fantastic Four outing may provide the reboot with a fighting chance. Director Matt Shakman's vision and star-studded lineup could create the cinematic storm necessary to propel the film to success.
