MUBI Releases Restored and Remastered Blu-ray Edition of Lars Von Trier’s The Kingdom Trilogy
Get ready for some surreal and otherworldly horrors!
MUBI, the popular streaming platform, is set to release a restored and remastered Blu-ray edition of Lars Von Trier's iconic The Kingdom Trilogy. The trilogy set will include The Kingdom (1994), The Kingdom II (1997), and the highly-anticipated The Kingdom Exodus (2022).
A Danish hospital hiding dark secrets
The Kingdom Trilogy takes us deep into the underbelly of a Danish hospital, where strange and supernatural events occur. From the anguished cries of a young girl in the elevator shafts to the phantom ambulance that speeds through the streets of Copenhagen every night, this series is full of spine-tingling moments. Secret societies lurk in the basement, while oblivious staff members remain consumed by their petty grievances, unaware of the demonic awakening that threatens to shake the building to its core.
From obscurity to household name
When The Kingdom I aired on Danish television in 1994, Lars Von Trier was already gaining a reputation for his unique storytelling and artistic style. However, it was The Kingdom that truly put him on the map. This series, often compared to Twin Peaks, captivated audiences with its surreal and enigmatic narrative. Von Trier's mischievous sign-offs during the credits of each episode only added to the intrigue.
A handheld style ahead of its time
Von Trier's creative idiosyncrasies are on full display in The Kingdom Trilogy. Breaking away from the refined formalism of his earlier work, he embraced a handheld style that would later influence popular shows like The Office and even his own Dogme 95 manifesto. In fact, he once joked that they did everything possible to make the cinematography look terrible, resulting in a unique and visually captivating experience.
From The Kingdom to provocation
Following the success of The Kingdom, Von Trier continued to push boundaries with his provocative and thought-provoking films. Works like Antichrist, Dogville, Nymphomaniac, Melancholia, and The House that Jack Built solidified his status as a true maverick in the world of cinema.
