Ncuti Gatwa Takes on Iconic Role as the New Doctor Who
From "Sex Education" to the TARDIS
Ncuti Gatwa has had an incredible year, starring in the final season of Netflix's "Sex Education" and the highly anticipated movie "Barbie." But now, he's taking on an even bigger role as the new Doctor Who.
A Confusing Doctor Who Universe
Gatwa was announced as the new Doctor back in May 2022, but since then, the Doctor Who universe has become a bit more complex. In the special episode "The Power of the Doctor," Jodie Whittaker's Time Lord regenerated into David Tennant, who is now playing the Fourteenth Doctor. So where does this leave Ncuti Gatwa? When will the Fifteenth Doctor make his debut?
David Tennant Returns as the Fourteenth Doctor
David Tennant, beloved by Doctor Who fans, is reprising his role as the Doctor in three anniversary specials set to release on Nov. 25, Dec. 2, and Dec. 9. While these will air on BBC One in the U.K., they will stream exclusively on Disney Plus internationally. But fear not, as Doctor Who will also be back for a Christmas special on Dec. 25.
Gatwa's First Appearance
Ncuti Gatwa is confirmed to make his Doctor Who debut in the Christmas special titled "The Church on Ruby Road." This special not only marks a new era for the series but also introduces Gatwa's new companion, Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson. However, fans can expect to see Gatwa on screen before this episode airs.
A Doctor Who Tradition
Traditionally, the new Doctor makes a cameo appearance in the final episode of the previous Doctor. For example, David Tennant had a cameo in Jodie Whittaker's finale. So, it's likely that Ncuti Gatwa will make his big Doctor Who debut in the Dec. 9 special called "The Giggle." This episode will feature a face-off between the Fourteenth Doctor and Neil Patrick Harris' highly anticipated returning villain, The Toymaker.
A Promising Future for Gatwa
Once Ncuti Gatwa joins the Doctor Who universe, fans can expect to see him for a while. Season 14 is set to premiere in the spring of 2024, and Gatwa has already confirmed that he will be sticking around for at least one more season. Long live the Fifteenth Doctor!
