Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge Was Filmed in the UK
Iconic Sets and Elements
Netflix's hit show Squid Game has become a global phenomenon, and now its spin-off competition show, Squid Game: The Challenge, is captivating fans around the world. The show, which features 456 contestants competing in childhood challenges for a historic $4.56 million prize, brings the iconic sets and elements from the original series to life.
A UK Production
While the original Squid Game was filmed in South Korea, Squid Game: The Challenge was shot in the United Kingdom. Netflix utilized The Wharf Studios, a massive production studio in London, England, to create the impressive sets seen on the show. Contestants lived in the studio for 16 days during filming, and it is likely where the winner will be crowned on the 10th episode.
The Wharf Studios: A Creative Space
The Wharf Studios, described as a "private 10-acre campus," offers six large sound stages and over 200,000 square feet of flexible creative space. It is equipped with production offices, workshops, drive-in access, and ample parking, making it the perfect location for Squid Game: The Challenge.
Cardington Studios: A Historic Setting
In addition to The Wharf Studios, Netflix also utilized Cardington Studios, a 55-meter-tall building in Bedford, just north of London. This historic space, originally used to construct zeppelins and airships in the 1920s, served as the setting for the iconic "Red Light, Green Light" challenge in Squid Game: The Challenge.
A Nod to the Original
Netflix made sure to recreate the sets from the original Squid Game to give fans a familiar experience. From colorful swirling staircases to a sandy playground, the sets were rebuilt to match what viewers saw in the first season. For example, 20 tons of steel were used to recreate the sleeping quarters, including the five-stacked bunk beds, and 60,000 custom-made tiles were laid to rebuild the bathroom.
Living Up to the Hype
Squid Game: The Challenge has not disappointed fans, delivering on the excitement and nostalgia of childhood games. While the stakes may not be as high as in the original series, the show is keeping viewers entertained until the highly anticipated second season of Squid Game arrives on Netflix, hopefully in 2024.
