New Superman Movie, “Superman: Legacy,” Set to Hit Theaters in 2025
Henry Cavill's Departure
The DC movie universe is returning to its roots with the highly anticipated film Superman: Legacy, set to be released in 2025. This announcement comes just one month after Henry Cavill revealed that he would no longer be portraying the iconic superhero. New Faces, Same Legend
After making his debut as Superman in 2013's Man of Steel and a final cameo in 2022's Black Adam, Cavill will be passing on the cape to David Corenswet. DCU announced in June 2023 that Corenswet would be taking over the role, with Rachel Brosnahan joining the cast as Lois Lane.
James Gunn and the Script
Director and writer James Gunn, known for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy, revealed that Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. In a YouTube video posted by DC, Gunn expressed his excitement about the project and assured fans that he is fully dedicated to bringing this new iteration of Superman to life.

In addition to Corenswet and Brosnahan, the cast of Superman: Legacy includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

While details about the plot of Superman: Legacy are being kept under wraps, DC Studios cochair Peter Safran revealed that it will not be an origin story. Instead, the film will focus on Superman's struggle to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Safran described the superhero as the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, representing kindness in a world that often undervalues it.
Gunn Sets the Record Straight
Addressing rumors that the film would feature a young Superman, James Gunn clarified that he was never planning to make a "young Superman" movie. He emphasized that Superman: Legacy is simply a Superman movie, showcasing the beloved character in a fresh and exciting way.
