Learning From the Best

The Holdovers star Dominic Sessa recently sat down with ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese to discuss his role in the holiday movie. Sessa opened up about his character's development and the experience of working alongside established actor Paul Giamatti.

A Story of Unlikely Bonds

The Holdovers, directed by Alexander Payne, follows a curmudgeonly instructor (played by Paul Giamatti) who is forced to stay at a New England prep school during Christmas break to look after a group of students with nowhere else to go. As the story unfolds, he forms an unexpected bond with a troubled student (newcomer Dominic Sessa) and the school's head cook, who is grieving the loss of her son in Vietnam (played by Da'Vine Joy Randolph).

Depicting the Pain of Grief

Treese and Sessa dive into the emotional depth of the film, particularly the portrayal of grief. Sessa explains how he wanted to depict the different stages of grief and the feeling of being lost and disconnected from the world. He emphasizes the importance of showing the various emotions that come with grief, rather than just one note of sadness or denial.

A Powerful Moment on Screen

Treese and Sessa discuss the impactful Christmas Eve scene in the kitchen, where Sessa's character, Mary, finally releases her pent-up emotions. Sessa shares that he tried not to approach the scene from a method acting perspective, but instead focused on finding joy and humor on set to balance out the intense moments. He wanted to hit the right tone without overwhelming viewers with too much emotion.

The Holdovers is currently playing in theaters, offering audiences a heartfelt and relatable holiday film that explores themes of grief, unlikely connections, and the power of human resilience.
