The Second Weekend Slump

It's no secret that superhero movies often experience a significant drop in box office numbers during their second weekends. The initial hype and enthusiasm from fans can be hard to sustain, leading to a decline of 55-65 percent. However, some movies still manage to maintain respectable or even excellent numbers, like "Spider-Man: No Way Home" which fell 68 percent in its second week and still had a successful run at the box office.

The Disappointing Debut of "The Marvels"

Unfortunately, "The Marvels" didn't fare well in its opening weekend, earning only $46.1 million. This is a third of what the original film made and marks the worst debut ever for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

A Steep Decline

According to the far-Left Deadline, "The Marvels" is estimated to experience a 73 percent decline from its already underwhelming opening. The film's current domestic total stands at $67 million. Keep in mind that the film's budget ranges from $220-275 million, not including the massive marketing costs.

A Controversial Director

Director Nia DiCosta's recent comments criticizing critics of the MCU's "woke makeover" didn't help the film's reception. DiCosta mentioned encountering virulent and racist, sexist, and homophobic pockets within fandom. It appears that these negative sentiments may have impacted the movie's box office performance.

A Negative Media Narrative

The media narrative surrounding "The Marvels" has been overwhelmingly negative, even from press outlets that typically support the MCU. The far-Left HuffPo rushed to defend the film, claiming that the response to it was racist and sexist. However, this defense overlooks the success of other black-led films in theaters and the popularity of feminist-themed movies like "Barbie."

Another Box Office Disappointment

Director Taika Waititi's "Next Goal Wins" also had a disappointing debut, earning only $2.2 million from 2,240 theaters. This was far below the predicted $4.2 million debut by BoxOfficePro.com. Waititi's once-golden reputation may be tarnished following this film and the poorly received "Thor: Love and Thunder."

Possible Factors for Underperformance

The lack of popularity of soccer in the United States and the potential alienation of some viewers due to a nonbinary performer in a prominent role may have contributed to the film's weak performance. Despite these setbacks, Kaimana's portrayal in the film was praised as a standout.
