Who is Yamata no Orochi in Jujutsu Kaisen?
A Mythical Creature
In the latest episode of Jujutsu Kaisen, fans witnessed an intense battle between Sukuna and Mahoraga, the most powerful shikigami in the Ten Shadows Technique. During the fight, Sukuna mentions Yamata no Orochi, sparking curiosity among viewers. But who exactly is Yamata no Orochi in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe?
Drawing from Japanese Mythology
In Jujutsu Kaisen, the concept of Yamata no Orochi draws inspiration from Japanese mythology. Although not much is known about Yamata no Orochi in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe, the mention of it by Sukuna suggests that it may share similarities with the mythical creature from Japanese folklore.
The Legend of Yamata no Orochi
In Japanese mythology, Yamata no Orochi is a fearsome dragon or serpent-like creature with eight heads and/or eight tails. The story goes that Susanoo, a powerful storm god, challenged his sister Amaterasu, the sun goddess, to a competition. When Amaterasu claimed victory, Susanoo became enraged, destroying her belongings and accidentally killing her favorite attendant. This angered Amaterasu, who banished Susanoo from Heaven, plunging the world into darkness.
During his banishment, Susanoo encounters Earthly Deities who were forced to sacrifice their daughters to Yamata no Orochi every year. With only one daughter left, they sought Susanoo's help. In exchange for his assistance, Susanoo requested to marry the last daughter. Together, they devised a plan to defeat Orochi.
Susanoo successfully cuts off all of Orochi's heads and tails, and during the battle, his blade strikes a sword, which becomes known as the Kusunagi-no-Tsurugi. As a gesture of apology, Susanoo presents this sword, along with the Yata no Kagami mirror and Yasakani no Magatama jewel, to Amaterasu. These three items later become the sacred Imperial Regalia of Japan.
A Connection to Jujutsu Kaisen
Considering the themes and inspirations in Jujutsu Kaisen, it is possible that Mahoraga's cursed tools are inspired by the Imperial Regalia. Fans can already see this connection with Mahoraga's Sword of Extermination. Furthermore, the Yamata no Orochi myth hints at a potential comparison or similarity between Susanoo and Sukuna in the series.
As Jujutsu Kaisen continues to captivate audiences with its blend of action, mythology, and supernatural elements, the mention of Yamata no Orochi adds another layer of intrigue to the story. Fans will undoubtedly be eager to learn more about this mysterious creature and its significance in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe.
