The Franchise's Near Demise

The Final Destination series was on the brink of extinction after the release of The Final Destination in 2009. But thanks to writer Eric Heisserer, the franchise was revived with a killer script that blew audiences away.

Behind the Scenes

The episode of WTF Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Final Destination 5 was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Tyler Nichols, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

New Life for Final Destination

After considering the franchise dead, Warner Bros announced in 2010 that they were developing a new film with Eric Heisserer, one of the writers of the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. Despite the backlash, Heisserer's script proved to be a game-changer.

A Director with Experience

Steve Quale, a former Second Unit Director for James Cameron, took the helm as the director of Final Destination 5. His experience on films like Titanic and Avatar brought a unique vision to the franchise.

A Talented Cast

The film quickly assembled a talented cast, including Miles Fisher, Nicholas D'Agosto, Arlen Escarpeta, David Koechner, Emma Bell, Jacqueline MacInnes-Wood, Ellen Wroe, PJ Byrne, Tony Todd, and Courtney B Vance.

Filming Locations

Final Destination 5 was filmed in Vancouver, Canada, the usual haunting grounds for the franchise. The opening bridge collapse scene was shot on both a set and the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver.

Gory Visuals and Suspense

The film utilized a combination of practical effects and CGI to create intense and visually stunning sequences. The opening credits featured various objects flying through glass, while the suspension bridge scene provided tension-building thrills.

A Twisted Prequel

Final Destination 5 shocked audiences by revealing that the events of the film actually take place before the infamous Flight 180. This twist added a new layer to the franchise's mythology and provided a fresh perspective on the original film.

A Human Villain

One of the standout elements of Final Destination 5 is the introduction of a human villain. Peter, played by Miles Fisher, becomes obsessed with cheating death and resorts to extreme measures to ensure his own survival.

Box Office Performance

Final Destination 5 was released in August 2011 and brought in $18.4 million on its opening weekend. While it became the lowest-grossing film in the franchise domestically, it received positive reviews and a B+ Audience CinemaScore.

The Future of the Franchise

Despite the positive response, a sixth installment has yet to be made. However, with new producers and directors on board, including Jon Watts of Spider-Man: No Way Home fame, there is hope that the franchise will continue to evolve in exciting ways.
